One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is desensitizing our sheepaddoodle puppies to the sound of fireworks. We are now at a point where they ignore the sounds completely even when the volume is turned up loud. How we accomplish this is we introduce the sounds at a low volume during positive events, like eating and playtime. The first time they heard the sounds, they were frightened. I stand back from them, and I let them explore and come out on their own, without any intervention. This way they learn to be confident on their own. Once they come out from hiding under the table, we then play, eat treats, etc. all while the firework sounds are playing. I slowly increase the volume. I do this over a period of several weeks. I practice playing the sounds at random times of day, even when they are sleeping. This way they will have experienced most possible real life situations but in their safe place. It is easier for them to learn when in their safe space, surrounded by their littermates. I do ask that new owners practice this a few times once you get your new puppy to solidify this desensitizing after they are comfortable with you in their new home.
When Mama Daisy is outside of the pen, we will sometimes place the smallest pup on her so they get a chance to eat their fill without being pushed off. Little Kevin on the right is the smallest of the litter and will probably be about 45 pounds grown. Mama is enjoying a bone while on break.
